About

Statement

I was a child artist and began stitching under the influence of my third grade art teacher, Miss Joan Veleff, who also awakened my desire to teach. (I noticed that she enjoyed travel and studio time in the summer.) Under her direction, my artistic talent developed... a lucky thing because I could barely learn to read.

I was a weaver for many years, but left the confines of the loom for freer expression; however, the repeat patterns of woven structure continue to influence my textile constructions. My primary obsession is pattern and the philosophy of "leave no space empty." I love pure hand embroidery as well as the sewing machine line, and love to work with evocative contemporary objects, such as credit card fragments, subway tokens, commercially-woven fabric labels, and commemorative embroidered patches. I enjoy deconstructing text so that work can be "read," but not logically, and assembling objects which comment on contemporary obsessions with consumerism and materialism.
